Product Description

The Turtle Tough Chlorine Analyser is a Free Chlorine Analyser.  The sensor is a membrane amperometric type which has been advanced with a third reference electrode to eliminate zero drift.  This unique design makes it less dependent pH, meaning that pH compensation is not usually required at all, completely eliminating reagents.

Many water companies want to measure free chlorine residuals without the need for chemical buffers traditionally associated with such measurements. Acetate and phosphate buffers are expensive and environmentally unfriendly. Buffer delivery systems are maintenance intensive and have fairly costly consumables and there are health and safety considerations in the handling of the acids and high disposal costs if the acid treated water is unable to be fed back into the water supply.

The sensor has outstanding sensitivity and stability and being largely pH-independent means that the measurements do not require buffers or reagents.  For high pH applications (ie where pH >8.5) it is possible to provide pH compensation from an additional pH sensor connected to the analyser.

The sensors work by separating the electrodes that perform the measurement from the sample, by a membrane. This membrane allows the free residual chlorine (HOCl and OCl) or the total residual chlorine (HOCl and OCl plus chloramines) through the membrane. Inside the sensor, the dissolved chlorine meets the electrolyte which is at a low pH. This converts the majority of the OCl to HOCl. The HOCl is reduced at the gold working electrode and the current generated is proportional to the chlorine present, and the instrument gives a reading in ppm or mg/l.

This technique is the most advanced method of continuous chlorine measurement and has many benefits to the user including a very stable online measurement and better dosing control.

Working Model

The Turtle Tough Chlorine Analyser (TT-Cl), comes with amperometric sensors and show remarkable sensitivity and stability. Case Studies

Chlorine monitoring - distribution network

In 2009 a customer bought a large number of chlorine analysers for both drinking water chlorination control and distribution monitoring. They did this after a year’s trial of a range of analysers. In 2012 they did a second trial on 30 of the distribution chlorine analysers installed in order to prove the savings that they had made. They effectively ran the analysers until they failed without re-calibration and without maintenance. The outcome of the research provided evidence that the analyser was within 10% of the calibrated value for more than 90 days without ANY operator intervention, including maintenance or calibration. The analyser proved itself unmatched for its stability in changing pH conditions and ability to reliably measure free and total chlorine. The technologically advanced user interface and remote communication ability were widely regarded as the “best” they had ever seen.

Chlorine Analyser Distribution Monitoring

Treating and disinfecting potable water at a water treatment facility are only some of the problems associated with ensuring that drinking water reaches the taps safely. In long distribution networks it is necessary to monitor for chlorine residual and if necessary to top it up with a small secondary chlorination plant. Secondary chlorination plants, by their nature, are often unmanned and in remote, inaccessible locations. For these reasons our Turtle Tough Chlorine Analyser is designed to meet the following requirements

Remote Water Treatment Plant – Chlorine, pH, Turbidity

Small water treatment and secondary disinfection plants tend to suffer from similar problems worldwide. One issue is the lack of communications and control infrastructure, the installation of which can be cost prohibitive.
